Heard the phrase 'SEO' used and don't know what it is? Find out here...
SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is the process of gaining traffic to your website and increasing your websites visibility in search engines' organic search results.
Search engines such as Google or Bing show 2 sets of results when you do a search, they have paid for results
where people pay to have their websites show up in your search and they have organic results
which the search engines themselves deem to be the most relevant to whatever you are searching for. As search engines drive almost 93% of web traffic it's imperative that your site shows in search results and of course, if you can get in the free listings rather than having to pay for it then that helps your bank balance too!
SEO is achieved in a number of ways but always starts with your actual website. A well structured, well written website that is pertinent to what the user searched for is always going to rank better than a site that isn't well put together. As part of your planning you'll find out what phrases people are using to search where you would want you website to show in the results and these become your keywords when you start to structure your site and put content together.
Say you eventually get on search engine result pages (SERPs) and people click on your link but when they get to your site they don't think it's relevant and instantly click back, it's something we all do, then this will affect your ranking in the search engines. Getting people on your site and making them stay there, read your content and move around your site will improve your ranking with search engines so your website still has to work for real life humans.
You can also improve your SEO by having people link to you. This isn't just a case of getting hundreds of links back to you. If a renowned quality website links to you this is going to rub off well on you, especially if the theme of the page linking to yours is similar to yours. However if someone links to you and their site is nothing to do with the topic of yours then users will most likely click back straight away.
